About Christine Escobar | Hudson County, NJ Urban Fashion Designer
CityZen Rose is a Latina-owned brand and I am super proud of that. I have a responsibility to my Hispanic community and my Colombian family to be more than what is expected of me. I knew I wanted to be a designer since I was 6 years old. You could say it’s in my blood as I come from a family of seamstresses and designers. My grandma used to create skirts and dresses for me for all our family parties and special occasions. She always had me flipping through fashion magazines and following trends. My mother worked so hard to make it in this country and I owe her everything. Making a living doing what I love means that I will be able to show my mother that all of her sacrifices were worth it.
The first person to ever breathe life into my dream as a teen was my cousin, Eric Perez. At the time I was in high school trying to decide what I should study in college/university and he encouraged me to go for art or design, but at the time I couldn’t see a secure future in those fields. Eric was a very talented designer in Colombia and dressed Ms. Colombia on several occasions. I was very proud of him and admired him for always being himself and following his dreams. He lived his life in a way that would have you thinking he didn’t fear failure. The most important jewel he gave me was to embrace my individual style instead of trying to follow trends, this is advice that I would come to understand only when I wanted to create something that was completely different then what I was seeing in stores and online.
CityZen Rose came about in 2019 when I took a leap of faith and hopped on a plane to Bogota, Colombia. My aunt, Bery, a very talented seamstress, brought my first few pieces to life by creating the entire OG Collection. At the time I didn’t know anything about making clothing, all I had was a book full of sketches and a bunch of ideas. Thanks to her I was able to bring my very first sketches to life and learn a great deal about the manufacturing process.
CityZen Rose, the brand, is dedicated to my grandmother, Gilma Rosa, and my cousin Eric Perez who are no longer with us but their influence and love shaped me as an artist and designer. This whole process from designing to manufacturing my first piece has been a surreal experience with unbelievable life lessons and business lessons. And there is still so much to come!
